Changes in programming due to COVID-19

March 13, 2020 | Written by Dylan Rosenthal

In an effort to care for the well-being of our neighbors, Abundant Life is taking the following measures, effective immediately, in response to growing concerns about COVID-19:

Mentoring/Discipleship Programs

We are suspending group meetings for our youth mentoring/discipleship programs (Royal Girls, 5/8 Club, Crown Academy, and STRIVE) for the rest of March as we reassess the trajectory of the situation. Our planned college visits are no longer viable – both for public health reasons and because of the compromised ability for those schools to host us effectively. We will explore potential alternatives during April for our youth, in the event that at that time there is a more positive public health outlook/prognosis regionally.

Tutoring/Academic Programs

City schools have already suspended after school programs until April 5, which includes our Johnson, Walker, and Buford tutoring programs as well as Bible Club. Once city schools begin allowing after school meetings we will determine the best process for providing academic support to our youth. Our UVA tutors will be unavailable for the rest of the semester.

Family Communication & Support

We are sending out correspondence to our participant families early next week regarding our plans for this month, and our hopes for all of us to endure this season of social distancing together. In lieu of group-based youth program meetings, program staff are contacting our participating families in order to show support and ascertain opportunities to walk alongside them effectively. We are prayerfully considering creative and innovative ways to remain connected to our participants and neighbors through technology. Additionally, we are supporting Charlottesville City Schools’ food disbursement program (free meal pickup for all students 18 and under) to try to mitigate any effects of food insecurity on our neighbors. Click here to volunteer in the food disbursement program.

Upcoming Events

Our fundraising event, Abundant Madness 2020, has been canceled. We will be in touch shortly with those who have already bought tickets and/or donated towards the event.

In the midst of this COVID-19 pandemic, please join us in praying for our neighbors, city, and world.
