God at work: Our 2020 Annual Report

December 16, 2020 | Written by Dylan Rosenthal

Dear Abundant Life Family,

This has been a challenging year. From a global pandemic, to racial unrest, to a polarized political climate, we have all had to wrestle with how to navigate these uncertain times. It is important to acknowledge these realities, but we refuse to stop there. We are committed to asking the question: “Where is God at work, and how might we join God’s work?” When we resist the temptation towards despair our eyes become capable of seeing the hand of God. From a child being able to learn in a safe environment, to a first-time homeowner receiving their keys, to creative partnerships helping communities not only survive but thrive, we have been reminded that “social distancing” can never dictate the presence and power of God.

In advent God draws near

This is also the lesson of Advent. With the coming of Christ, God draws near to his creation and demonstrates that God’s presence knows no bounds. As a Jew, he draws near to the Samaritan woman, defying the ethnic barriers of his day. He enters a politically tense world, rife with the Roman occupation and oppression of Israel. And he is even willing to touch those whom the rest of his society has labeled unclean. God’s presence knows no bounds. As Psalm 139:8 reminds us, “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” But what is beautiful about Christ’s presence is that God transforms the things he touches. In the face of Roman rule, he inaugurates the kingdom of God. In the face of ethnic divisions, he accomplishes reconciliation through the cross. And Christ overcomes the powers of sin and death through the resurrection. Christ transforms the things that he touches. This is the good news that changed the world two thousand years ago and it continues to change the world today.

Our Annual Report highlights God at work

God told the nation of Israel through the Prophet Isaiah, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! … I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Throughout this impact report, you will see glimpses of the new things that God has been doing; the ways he has been present during this unique season. We hope that you are encouraged by this work and we remain grateful for your help in making it possible. Whether you partner with us through praying, volunteering, or giving financially, this report reflects the fruit of you joining us and Prospect families along this journey.

With gratitude,
